From Proto-Germanic *brūkaną (to enjoy, use), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrūg- (enjoy). Cognate with Old Frisian brūka, Old High German brūhhan (German brauchen), Old English brūcan, Dutch gebruiken, Gothic 𐌱𐍂𐌿𐌺𐌾𐌰𐌽 (brūkjan).
