From Arabic قِرْطَاس (qirṭās), from Ancient Greek χάρτης (khártēs, sheet of paper), from χαράσσω (kharássō, to scratch, to inscribe), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (to scratch). Cognate to English chart. Doublet of carta.
