French edit

Etymology edit

From dés- +‎ emplir.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /de.zɑ̃.pliʁ/
  • (file)

Verb edit

désemplir

  1. (transitive, rare) to (partially) empty (something that is full up)
  2. (intransitive) to be nearly full (only used in negative constructions)
    • 1829, Victor Hugo, Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné, section XII:
Ils se sont succédé à de court intervalles; il paraît que ce cachot ne désemplit pas.
They succeeded one another at short intervals; it seems that this cell is always busy.

Conjugation edit

This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
