Icelandic edit

Etymology edit

From Old Norse dauðr, from Proto-Germanic *daudaz.

Pronunciation edit

Adjective edit

dauður (comparative dauðari, superlative dauðastur)

  1. dead
    Synonyms: dáinn, látinn

Usage notes edit

Dauður is in most circumstances a cold and heartless term that is not used for people (except when showing contempt). Dáinn and látinn are more respectful and are used instead.
