Probably from Vulgar Latin *disiūnāre, from disieiūnāre (“to break the fast”), from Late Latin dis- + iēiūnō (“to fast”), from Latin ieiūnus. Compare Old French disner (modern dîner); compare also déjeuner, Spanish desayunar.
