- (East Germany, Bavaria, Austria) quarter to, a quarter-hour before, 15 minutes before (used with the number of the following hour)
- Wir treffen uns um dreiviertel zwei.
- We’re meeting at quarter to two.
Usage notes edit
Unlike the construction halb zwei (“half past one, one-thirty”), constructions like viertel zwei and dreiviertel zwei are restricted to the eastern and southern parts of the German-speaking area, and may not be understood elsewhere. In the remaining parts of the German-speaking area, the usual constructions are Viertel nach eins (“quarter past one”) and Viertel vor zwei (“quarter to two”).
