EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Baltic *gem-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷem- (to go, to come, to step), from which also dzemdēt (to give birth) (q.v.). From the zero grade form *gʷm̥- comes Latvian dzimt (to be born) (q.v.). Cognates include Lithuanian gimda.[1]
