ensonify (third-person singular simple present ensonifies, present participle ensonifying, simple past and past participle ensonified)

  1. (transitive) To fill with sound.
    The mechanism of landmine detection is to ensonify the ground with an acoustic source and measure the intensity of the returning sound waves.

Usage notes edit

The spelling ensonify appears to be used by some authors when describing underwater sonar imaging, e.g. involving the search for submerged mines. The spelling insonify is more common, especially in the context of medical ultrasound imaging.
