Cognate with Latvian ērce, from Proto-Baltic [Term?], of unknown ultimate origin. Compare Proto-Slavic *ràkъ ~ *òrkъ (crayfish),[1] in which case a doublet of rõkis; possibly from an extinct substrate language.[2]
