Etymology edit

From Old Swedish flere, flæster, from Old Norse fleiri, from Proto-Germanic *flaizô, derived from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁- (full, many). Cognate, among others, with Icelandic fleiri, flestr, Latin plūs and Ancient Greek πλέως (pléōs), πλεῖστος (pleîstos).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /fleːr/
  • (file)

Adjective edit

fler or flera (plural only, superlative flest or flesta)

  1. more and most (in numbers)
De var många, men vi var fler.
They were many, but there were more of us.
    De flesta kan läsa.
    Most [people] can read.
Jag plockade fler äpplen än Anna, men Sven plockade flest äpplen.
I picked more apples than Anna, but Sven picked even more apples.
Sven plockade de flesta äpplena, så blev det inte så många kvar till Anna och mig.
Sven picked most of the apples [from the tree], so not many were left to Anna and me.

Usage notes edit

  • Many native Swedish speakers would consider this to be a comparative of mången, månget, många (many), which however is a pronoun and not an adjective.
