Swedish edit
Etymology edit
From Old Swedish flere, flæster, from Old Norse fleiri, from Proto-Germanic *flaizô, derived from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁- (“full, many”). Cognate, among others, with Icelandic fleiri, flestr, Latin plūs and Ancient Greek πλέως (pléōs), πλεῖστος (pleîstos).
Pronunciation edit
Adjective edit
fler or flera (plural only, superlative flest or flesta)
- more and most (in numbers)
- De var många, men vi var fler.
- They were many, but there were more of us.
- De flesta kan läsa.
- Most [people] can read.
- Jag plockade fler äpplen än Anna, men Sven plockade flest äpplen.
- I picked more apples than Anna, but Sven picked even more apples.
- Sven plockade de flesta äpplena, så blev det inte så många kvar till Anna och mig.
- Sven picked most of the apples [from the tree], so not many were left to Anna and me.
Usage notes edit
- Many native Swedish speakers would consider this to be a comparative of mången, månget, många (“many”), which however is a pronoun and not an adjective.
