Etymology edit
Inherited from Old French forain, from Vulgar Latin *forānus (“outsider”), from Latin forīs (“outside”). Assimilated to foire (“fair”) (which is from Latin fēria) through folk etymology. Once meant "foreign", but replaced by étranger in this sense.
