From Proto-Vietic *-koːlʔ, perhaps from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kulʔ, a variant of *kəl( ) ~ *kəəlʔ (“to support; to help”). Compare Khmer កល់ (kɑl, “to support from below”), ខ្នល់ (khnɑl, “prop; cushion”).
