From Proto-West Germanic *halhuk, equivalent to healh + -oc. Cognate with Middle Low German hallik (“cavity, hollow space between a kiln and oven”). Compare also Middle Low German hallig, hallich, halg, halch (“land beyond or unprotected by a dike, low-lying island”).
