Earlier also written herr, a short form of herre (“gentleman, mister, master”). Titles tend to be shortened in a pretonic position in Danish, compare frue > fru (“Mrs.”), konge > kong (“King ...”), greve > grev (“Count ...”).

Used in direct address (vocative) or prefixed with a personal name, e.g. Kom indenfor, hr., Jeg mødte hr. Jensen i går.
In the present Danish language, it is unusual to refer to another person with a title and the last name, even in formal contexts.
