infirmité motrice cérébrale

French edit

Etymology edit

First used by Professor Guy Tardieu in 1955

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ɛ̃.fiʁ.mi.te mɔ.tʁis se.ʁe.bʁal/

Noun edit

infirmité motrice cérébrale f (uncountable)

  1. cerebral palsy
Synonyms: IMC; ~ paralysie cérébrale; ~ infirmité motrice d’origine cérébrale, IMOC

Usage notes edit

The term is more widely used in France than paralysie cérébrale and sometimes used synonymously instead. However, the main difference is that IMC is a motor disorder “accompanied by sensory impairment and partial impairment of higher functions with the exception of intellectual problems”. This is included under the definition of paralysie cérébrale, thus a more general term or a hypernym. The term infirmité motrice d'origine cérébrale has also been proposed to cover the broader meaning. [1]
