From Japanese 神社 (jinja じんじゃ), from Middle Chinese 神社 (ʒin-dʒjǽ) (compare Mandarin shénshè 神社), from Old Chinese 神社 (*Cə.lin-mtʰaʔ "sacrificial altar", "shrine"), from ("deity", "divine") + ("Earth deity [and altar]").
