Etymology edit
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قیصقاج (ḳıṣḳac, “folding steps”)[1][2] or قیصاج (ḳıṣac, “pincers”),[3][4] from Proto-Turkic *kïsgač,[5][6] from *kïs- (“to squeeze, to pinch”) + *-gač,[7] equivalent to kıs- (“to squeeze”) + -kaç. Cognates with Azerbaijani qısqac, Karakhanid قِسْغاجْ (qısɣač), Karaim кыскач, Kazakh қысқыш (qysqyş), Tatar кыскыч (qıskıç), Turkmen gysgyç, Uyghur قىسقاچ (qisqach), Uzbek qisqich.
