Inherited from Ottoman Turkish كفارت (keffaret, kefaret, “a canonical atonement for a sin, a remedy, resource”),[1] from Arabic كَفَّارَة (kaffāra, “penance, atonement”), from كَفَّرَ (kaffara, “to cover, to hide”).[2]
