kimdõ
Livonian
editEtymology
editA fossilized partitive form of kim (in contrast to the modern form kimmõ), from Proto-Finnic *kümmentä. The partitive was originally used in all multiples of ten from 20 to 90, as can still be seen in for example Finnish kaksikymmentä. It was eventually turned into an independent word, comparable to the English teen.
Pronunciation
editNumeral
editkimdõ
- ten, tens, -ty, -ties referring to some number of tens always in conjunction with some type of a determiner
Usage notes
editAs a standalone term to refer to "ten" kim is used. -kimdõ is used not only in names of tens (20-90) but with other determiners as well, e.g., mitskimdõ (“~ several dozen”).
