Inherited from Old Swedish klisther, from Low German klīster, an originally Central German word, possibly from Old High German *klīstar, from Proto-West Germanic *klīstr, from Proto-Germanic *klīstrą (paste, goo), ultimately from the root of Klei (clay), from Proto-Indo-European *gleh₁y- (to smear, glue); compare *klinaną, *klaimaz, *klaiþą, etc.
