Etymology edit

Probably from dialectal pronunciation of Italian la pancia "the belly," with the definite article absorbed, from Latin pantex (genitive panticis) "belly" (see paunch).^[1]^[2] More likely from Sicilian bonza (“any large rounded liquid container”).
