laglast (plural laglasts)

  1. (archaic) A pupil ranked behind all others; an academic failure.
    • 1855, Augusta Theodosia Drane, Catholic Legends: a new collection, page 224:
      Master Roland says I am a dunce if I do not make them; and shall abide as I am, the laglast of the school, till I better know how to scan my lines, and have learnt the difference between a trochee and a spondee; []
    • 1859, Occasional Papers on University Matters and Middle Class Education; together with full information as to the local examinations and recent University changes (number 1-3, page 17)
      It may be taken for granted, it is said, that where the cleverest boys are best taught, there the laglasts will be whipped up most sharply.
