From Old Frisian hlakia, hlakkia, from Proto-West Germanic *hlakōn, *hlakkōn, from Proto-Germanic *hlakkōną. Cognate with Saterland Frisian laachje (“to laugh”), Old English hlacerung (“scoffing, mockery, scorn”), Icelandic hlakka (“to scream, screech”).
