This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “I'm not sure which is the more original sense here. Huình Tịnh Của in Đại Nam quấc âm tự vị (1895) called it con giòi ở trong cơm ("the maggots/wormy things in the rice") so it seems they were aware that it's some kind of worm. But it's also possible that this word originally applied to the rice, and the worm was named after it as the mean of fermentation.”
