From Proto-Cushitic *ma?-/*miʔ- (to be wet) from Proto-Afroasiatic *maʔ-. Compare Egyptian mw, Aasax maʔa, also Dahalo maʔa; Hebrew מים (máyim), Classical Syriac ܡܝܐ (mayyā) and Somali maanyo.
