Etymology edit

Compound of mata (the important part) +‎ kuliah (lecture) (similar to Indonesian mata pelajaran). Compare to Chinese 科目 (kēmù, “course, subject”, literally “branch of study + eye”) and Japanese 科目(かもく) (kamoku, subject; course).
