Inherited from Middle English *mystal, from myx (dung) +‎ stal (shed).

For the disappearance of /k/ before /st/, compare the disappearance of /x/ before /st/ in Anglian Old English hēst (highest), nēsta (nearest), and sesta (sixth), surviving in Scots neest (next).
