From Proto-Slavic *melti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mélˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *melh₂- (“to crush, grind”); cognate with Upper Sorbian mlěć, Polish mleć, Czech mlít, Russian моло́ть (molótʹ), Old Church Slavonic млѣти (mlěti).
