From Proto-Hmong-Mien *n-mɛj (“to have”), possibly related to Chinese 買/买 (mǎi, “to buy”) and 賣/卖 (mài, “to sell”) (and thus muas (“to buy”) and muag (“to sell”)), though the details are unclear. Cognate with Iu Mien maaih.[1]
