Inherited from Middle French musser, from Old French muchier, mucier, mucer (to hide), from Frankish *mukjan, *mukōn (to hide, skulk), from Proto-Germanic *mukjaną, *mukōną (to hide, waylay, steal), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mūg- (to rob, steal).
