From Old Norse neyða, from Proto-Germanic *naudijaną, cognate with Old English nīedan, Old High German nōten, Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌿𐌸𐌾𐌰𐌽 (nauþjan). Derived from the noun *naudiz (need).
