From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ŋiaw (“meow of a cat”), possibly of onomatopoeic origin. Compare Ilocano ngiaw (“meow”), Kankanaey ngiyaw (“cat”), Ibaloi ngiyaw (“cat”), Karao ngiyaw (“cat”), Bikol Central ngiyaw (“meow”), Cebuano ngiyaw (“meow”), and Malay ngiau (“meow”).
