From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ŋiaw (meow of a cat), possibly of onomatopoeic origin. Compare Ilocano ngiaw (meow), Kankanaey ngiyaw (cat), Ibaloi ngiyaw (cat), Karao ngiyaw (cat), Bikol Central ngiyaw (meow), Cebuano ngiyaw (meow), and Malay ngiau (meow).
