Etymology edit

Singularized plural of *nusë, from Proto-Albanian *nutjā, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)nubʰ-tyeh₂, from *snewbʰ-; compare Latin nūbō (to marry a man), Czech snoubiti (to woo). For the sense development, Greek νύφη (nýfi, bride, daughter-in-law), from Ancient Greek νύμφη (númphē, bride). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *snutjā, from Proto-Indo-European *snu-eh₂- (daughter-in-law), derivative of *snusós (compare Latin nurus, Sanskrit स्नुषा (snuṣā), Ancient Greek νυός (nuós), Old English snoru). Attributed by Vladimir Orel 2000 (:34) to Latin nūptia as a later Latin loan.
