From Proto-Finnic *onci, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *omte (“cavity”) or *oŋte. Cognate with Veps onduz, Erzya ундо (undo, “hole, cavity, hollow”)[1] and Hungarian odú (“haunt, animal hole”).
