From New Latin oxyrhynchus, from Ancient Greek ὀξῠ́ρρῠγχος (oxúrrhunkhos, a kind of Egyptian fish) (whence also the place name Ὀξῠ́ρρῠγχος (Oxúrrhunkhos), from ὀξῠ́ς (oxús, sharp) +‎ ῥῠ́γχος (rhúnkhos, snout).
