peruskoulu
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
perus- (“basic”) + koulu (“school”)
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
peruskoulu
- The name commonly used in Finnish for Finland's 9-year comprehensive schools starting at the age of 7 (literally means "basic school"; a more precise or more descriptive name would be (yhdeksänvuotinen) yhtenäiskoulu).
Usage notes edit
The peruskoulu replaced the earlier kansakoulu (“free primary school for everyone”) and keskikoulu (“middle school with entrance exams and school fees”) starting in 1972.
