Learned borrowing from Late Latin procopē, via Ancient Greek προκοπή (prokopḗ) from verb προκόπτω (prokóptō, “to cut away in front; forward, advance”), προ- (pro-, “before; in front”) + κόπτω (kóptō, “to cut”).
