From Vulgar Latin *ragatius, of uncertain origin:
- From Arabic رَقَّاص (raqqāṣ, “courrier, delivery boy”).
- Alternatively, from Ancient Greek ῥάκος (rhákos, “rag, tatter”, suggesting the clothing).
