   • 1862, United States. Court of Claims, Reports from the Court of Claims, page 597:

     If the stone is very rifty the axe will work best on the quarry bed; because in the axe working on the quarry face, where the stone is solid, it will show a smooth service, but in the rifty places it will show roughness and the defect in the stone.
