From the same Proto-Finno-Ugric *śorwa as Estonian sarv and Hungarian szarv, which in turn is a loan from Proto-Indo-Iranian *śṛva, compare Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬏 (srū, horn, claw, talon), 𐬯𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬁 (srvā, horn), Middle Persian slwb' (srū, horn, nail), Persian سرو (surū, animal horn).
