From Middle Dutch schape (form). Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skapą (shape, nature, condition), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (to split, cut). Cognate with English shape (form), Middle High German geschaf (creature), Icelandic skap (state, condition, temper, mood). Related to Dutch scheppen (to create).
