sheddase (plural sheddases)

1. (biochemistry) Any of a group of membrane-bound enzymes that cleave extracellular portions of transmembrane proteins, releasing the soluble ectodomains from the cell surface.

   Many sheddases are members of the ADAM or aspartic protease (BACE) protein families.
