Etymology edit

Borrowed from Latin societātem ("community, society", accusative form), from socius (partner, ally). By surface analysis, socio +‎ -età. The senses of "association" and "company" were borrowed later. Doublet of soccida, which was inherited from the Latin nominative societās.
