Attested since the 18th century. From Late Latin suffragō (“hough, ham”), from sub- + *frāgō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrāg- (“rump, hock, hindquarters”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰreg- (“to break, crack, split”). Catalan sofraja.
