Borrowed from Japanese 炭酸 (tansan, “carbonated; carbonic acid”) (a clipping of 炭酸飲料 (tansan inryō, “carbonated drink”)), a genericized trademark by Clifford-Wilkinson Tansan Mineral Water Co., Ltd. popular in the Philippines in the early 20th century, initially romanized and introduced as "TANSAN" on metal bottlecaps and on English marketing material.
