Etymology edit

Sino-Vietnamese word from 太陽, composed of 太 (“great”) and 陽 (“yang”).

This short compound with the meaning "temple" is shared with many southern Sinitic lects, while other lects use different terms or a longer compound, cf. Mandarin 太陽穴／太阳穴.
