thupën
Albanian
editEtymology
editUnclear. There are two competing explanations:
- From Proto-Albanian *tsupina (“stick”). Cognate with Ancient Greek σιβύνη (sibúnē, “flute case”), itself of Illyrian origin. This is probably a Wanderwort, having cognates in Caucasian and Middle Eastern languages, such as Old Armenian սուին (suin, “spear”) and Persian زوبین (zôpin, “a spit”).(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Noun
