From Middle Dutch tooch, from Old Dutch togen (to show), from Proto-West Germanic *taugijan or *ataugijan, from Proto-Germanic *at + *augijaną (to display), similar to Gothic 𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ataugjan, to show). Alternatively from Proto-Germanic *ta + *augijaną.
