From Old Swedish værþer from Old Norse verðr (adjective), verð (noun), from Proto-Germanic *werþaz (towards, opposite), used substantively as a noun. Cognate with Dutch waard (adjective), German wert (adjective), Wert (noun), English worth.

Borrowed from Middle Low German wert (genitive: werdes), from Old Saxon werd or wird. Cognate with Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌳𐌿𐍃 (wairdus), German Wirt, Dutch waard.[1]
