Inherited from Latin (cōnsōbrīnus) vērus (“true cousin”), from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁ros, from *weh₁- (“true”). Cf. Aromanian ver and cusurin. For the semantic evolution compare Spanish and Portuguese primo.
